The mischief maker who streaked through the school corridors in Mount Temple was now streaking the halls of grande dame hotels in Paris, New York, and Sydney. The high Adam Clayton got off oxygen and cigarettes in Mount Temple had long since been replaced with stronger stuff. We’d always laughed at stories of Dennis trying to wake him up after a couple of days out, all day and all night. Pouring water on his sleeping head.

Never less than professional, he would eventually begin his bleary-eyed day with a bucket of coffee around his neck, but the fire he was playing with was starting to play with him. The drinking, once his playmate, was now his boss. Drugs had prolonged his ability to stay up late and still halfway function—enough to drink more.

He was the life and soul of the party right until the moment he wasn’t. Sydney marked the moment. It might have been the end of Adam’s youth, but that was better than the alternative. The end of Adam. It was very nearly the end of U2.
